After 25+ years of helping people improve their quality of life by providing them with the knowledge and tools that engender health and wellness, Bio-Energetic Nutrients have become my favorite category in all of nutrition science. The reason this category is so fascinating, is the predominance of research is quickly moving in the direction that shows nutrient and dietary sources of Bio-Energetic Nutrients may literally be the key to healthy aging. The reason these nutrients and botanical ingredients are so important is each work on the cellular level within a little organelle (i.e. mitochondria) to either protect or promote the production of ATP (Adenosine triphosphate). ATP is the energy currency for virtually every organ, gland, tissue, and cell in the human body.
Here’s the key: Bio-Energetic Nutrients help to promote or feed the body and brain this precious energy-generating molecule that frankly, aging cells are hungry for. Even more fascinating is the fact that some of these Bio-Energetic Nutrients like Acetyl-L-Carnitine, can promote a process called Mitochondrial Biogenesis which is the process where your cells actually “build or create new mitochondria,” and that holds the promise of potentially improving the health and vitality for both the brain and body as we age.
Finally, Bio-Energetic Nutrients are exactly what they sound like: They are energetic – you can feel them working! A great example again is Acetyl-L-Carnitine. This nutrient is so energetic, if you take it at bed-time it’s not likely you will be falling asleep anytime soon. Instead, you’ll be thinking about your to-do list for tomorrow or anything but sleep! This is exactly why I have always advised people to only take Acetyl-L-Carnitine in the morning and afternoon after lunch. That is, unless you do want to be alert and energetic at night.
The fact is though, most if not all people I have met who are my age and older are looking for more mental energy.
